Syndicate of Bus Drivers of Tehran and Suburbs - Condemning the Massacre of Protesters

Statement by the Syndicate of Bus Drivers of Tehran and Suburbs

Condemning the Massacre of Protesters

Once again, the oppressed people of our country are mourning their children. This time, the killing of protesters opposing the economic and social policies of the Islamic Republic has been broader in scale and more horrific than the street killings of the 1980s, as well as the crimes committed in January 2017, November 2019, and September 2022. The profound shock that has gripped society does not stem from surprise—we have long known the brutality and savagery of the regime’s repressive forces—but from the rulers’ decision, taken without hesitation or restraint, to massacre thousands of the children of this land. This crime marks the definitive end of any remaining hope for reform within the regime, even for the most optimistic and deluded.

Once again, the regime has demonstrated its utter disregard for the lives of the people and their children. How can such mass killings be carried out, only for the bodies of the victims to be displayed publicly with such cruelty and inhumanity? Can a government responsible for such acts retain even the slightest legitimacy in the eyes of the people?

Following the publication of the Syndicate’s statement titled “Supporting the People’s Rights Movement; Advancing Toward True Freedom and Equality, Not a Return to the Past,” we—along with more than 93 million people across the country—were subjected to a systematic shutdown of the Internet and other means of communication. This organized deprivation continued for days and, even now, communication remains unreliable. Despite these conditions, the Syndicate reaffirms the fundamental and inviolable principle that the true liberation of the Iranian people can only be achieved through collective leadership and the conscious, organized, and independent participation of the working class and all other oppressed groups within the country—not through military intervention by the United States, Israel, or any other foreign power and their affiliated forces.

While unequivocally condemning the mass killing of the country’s most deprived people, the Syndicate extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the January uprising and demands the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees.

News of executions reaches us daily. The authorities should remember that even the execution of thousands of political prisoners in the 1980s failed to silence the people’s demand for justice, freedom, and equality. Today’s mass killings and executions, carried out in a far more aware, diverse, and informed society, will not suppress deep-rooted social discontent. On the contrary, they will only intensify public anger and resistance. The least costly path for the people and the country is the immediate withdrawal of those in power and the immediate cessation of the machinery of killing, repression, and destruction.

Long live freedom, equality, and solidarity of all

The solution for workers and toilers lies in unity and organization
